When your fantasy league enters playoff mode, every team receives a seed based on its regular-season results. That seed determines their bracket position. This article explains how seeds are assigned and how ties are broken.
Applies to: H2H Points leagues with playoff settings, and all ESPN Fantasy Football leagues (which use the H2H Points format). For H2H Most Categories or H2H Each Category leagues, refer to the tiebreaker article for those formats.
How Seeds Are Assigned
When the regular season ends, the system assigns seeds automatically using two primary factors, in order:
- Division Winners — Division winners always occupy the top seeds. This step is skipped in leagues with no divisions.
- Winning Percentage — Among non-division-winner seeds, the team with the best winning percentage earns the higher seed.
Reminder: Division winners always claim the first seeds in the bracket. In LM leagues, the League Manager has final authority over playoff rules.
Standard Tiebreaker Sequence
When two or more teams finish the regular season with identical winning percentages, the following tiebreakers are applied in order until the tie is resolved. Once a team is seeded, the process restarts from the top for the next seed.

Tiebreaker Process: Two Teams Tied
- Compare H2H records between the two teams. Best record wins.
- If H2H records are equal, compare Points For. Most points wins.
- If Points For are equal, compare Intradivisional Record.
- If Intradivisional Record is equal, compare Points Against. Most points wins.
- If still tied, a virtual coin flip determines the seed.
Tiebreaker Process: Multiple Teams Tied
When more than two teams are tied, the process works one seed at a time — determine the top seed among the tied group, remove that team, then repeat for the next seed.
- Compare H2H records among all tied teams. The team with the best overall record earns the top seed.
- Among the remaining tied teams, compare H2H records again.
- If the remaining teams did not play each other an equal number of times, skip to Points For. The team with the highest Points For earns the next seed.
- Repeat until all tied teams are seeded.
Key rule: After each seed is assigned, the tiebreaker process resets from Step 1 (H2H Record) for the remaining tied teams.
Tiebreaker Example: Five Teams, All win 7–5 records
The following example shows the full seeding process for a five-team tie. All teams finished 7–5.

Step 1: Seed the Division Winners (#1 and #2 seeds)
Teams E and C are division winners. They go to the top two seeds. To determine which gets #1:
- Team E beat Team C in their head-to-head matchup.
- Team E → #1 seed. Team C → #2 seed.
No divisions? If your league has no divisions, skip this step. The team with the best winning percentage earns the #1 seed directly.
Step 2: Determine the #3 Seed (Teams A, B, D)
All three teams are 7–5. We start with H2H records among the three:
- Team A: 1–1 (beat B, lost to D)
- Team B: 0–1 (lost to A; did not play D)
- Team D: 1–0 (beat A; did not play B)
H2H tiebreaker is invalid here: The three teams did not all play each other an equal number of times (B and D never met). We move to Points For.
Points For comparison:
- Team A: 825
- Team B: 918 ← highest
- Team D: 720
Team B earns the #3 seed.
Step 3: Determine the #4 Seed (Teams A and D)
The tiebreaker resets. Both teams are 7–5. We compare their head-to-head matchup:
- Team D beat Team A.
Team D earns the #4 seed. Team A receives the #5 seed.
League Manager (LM) Leagues
In LM leagues, the League Manager can customize or override the default tiebreaker sequence using the Edit Playoffs page in LM Tools.
Best practice: If your league uses custom tiebreakers, define and publish them clearly on the League Office page before the season begins to avoid disputes.
Grandfathered Custom Leagues only: "Most Points from Bench" is available as a tiebreaker option exclusively for grandfathered Custom Leagues that used this rule in prior seasons. It is not available for new leagues.
