STANDARD SCORING FORMATS (Public Leagues)
ESPN Fantasy Football offers two types of public leagues to join: Points-Per-Reception (PPR) scoring leagues and Standard (non-PPR) Scoring leagues.
The difference between a Points-Per-Reception (PPR) league and a Standard Scoring (Non-PPR) league in ESPN Fantasy Football lies in how they reward receptions made by offensive players, especially wide receivers, tight ends, and pass-catching running backs. In a PPR league, players who catch a reception will earn a point. Standard (non-PPR) leagues do not award a point for a successful catch.
From a strategic perspective, Standard (non-PPR) leagues favor big plays and touchdowns over consistent volume while Points-Per-Reception (PPR) leagues favor consistent volume, such as players who catch lots of short passes on a regular basis. WR’s who have a high target percentage and pass-catching RBs are valuable in PPR leagues because of their additional opportunities to score points.
Standard (Non-PPR) League:
- No points awarded for a reception.
- Points come from:
- Yardage (e.g., 1 point per 10 rushing or receiving yards)
- Touchdowns (typically 6 points)
- Other stats like field goals, extra points, or turnovers
Points-Per-Reception (PPR) League:
- Adds 1 point for every catch a player makes
- Points come from:
- Successful receptions
- Yardage (e.g., 1 point per 10 rushing or receiving yards)
- Touchdowns (6 points)
- Other stats like field goals, extra points, or turnovers
Example:
Your running back has this stat line:
- 50 rushing yards
- 6 catches for 30 receiving yards
- One touchdown
Standard Scoring (non-PPR): 14 Points Total
- Rushing Yards – 5 Points
- Receiving Yards – 3 Points
- Touchdown – 6 Points
Points-Per-Reception (PPR): 20 Points Total
- Rushing Yards – 5 Points
- Receiving Yards – 3 Points
- Receptions - 6 Points
- Touchdown – 6 Points
LEAGUE MANAGER SCORING FORMATS (LM Leagues)
LM leagues are nonstandard scoring leagues, with a variable number of teams (4-20), which use customized rule settings. All customizable leagues use the head-to-head scoring system. In this system, each team in your league faces off against one other team every week of the season. However, your league might contain bye weeks. The winner of each of these matchups is the team that accumulates the most fantasy points determined by the weekly statistics of the players in each team's lineup and the scoring settings of your league. Weekly results are compiled into an overall record and displayed on the league's standings page.
Below is a comprehensive list of scoring categories available in ESPN Fantasy Football. Each category lists the standard game settings and all options available in the custom game. In the custom game the specific categories and their corresponding point values can be edited by the League Manager (LM) to fit your league's custom scoring system. The numbers displayed in the brackets (i.e., 1, 5, 10), show the available buckets to be selected. Decimal values are allowed for each category (tenth and hundredth of a point). If your league is already set up, view your League Settings page to see how your league scores each category.
NOTE: In LM Leagues only, scoring categories and their corresponding point values can be changed by the league manager anytime during the season. If either are changed after the season has begun, the system will automatically change all previous game results to match the changed settings.
